AI-Led Equity Strength Collides with Multi-Decade High Bond Yields

Fundamental Overview

Markets remain caught between competing forces, with limited scheduled economic news this week leaving the larger macro narratives firmly in control.

The most striking divergence remains between US equities and the bond market. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq remain close to record levels, supported by continued strength across the AI trade and major US technology companies. At the same time, US Treasury yields remain at multi-decade highs, with the 30-year yield around 5.66% ahead of this week’s important 10-year and 30-year bond auctions.

Ordinarily, sharply rising bond yields would be expected to create greater pressure on equity valuations. Instead, AI-related momentum continues to support the major US indices despite higher borrowing costs, elevated government debt, geopolitical uncertainty and restrictive central-bank policy.

Oil remains another important part of the macro picture. Prices continue to face downward pressure despite ongoing Middle East uncertainty, while discussion around potential restrictions on US diesel exports adds another variable to an already complicated energy backdrop.

Risk Sentiment

Risk sentiment remains distinctly mixed rather than providing a coherent risk-on or risk-off environment.

The equity side remains firmly supported by the AI trade, with major technology stocks driving indices towards or into record territory. The bond market, however, continues to communicate a much more cautious message through persistently elevated yields.

This creates an unusual environment: equities up and bond yields up simultaneously.

Until that divergence resolves, trade selection and patience remain particularly important. Different markets are currently moving for different reasons rather than responding to one dominant global risk narrative.

Technical Overview

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq retain an upside bias, although both are trading around significant resistance and record levels. A further breakout remains possible, but chasing prices at these levels offers less attractive positioning than a potential pullback.

The US dollar continues to benefit from elevated bond yields, keeping the broader dollar-strength theme intact. EUR/USD remains under longer-term downward pressure, although the move has already been substantial and momentum appears to be moderating.

USD/JPY remains a different proposition. Potential intervention and the possibility of tighter Japanese monetary policy continue to support the case for eventual yen strength, although meaningful follow-through has yet to materialise.

US oil continues to compress between diagonal and horizontal technical levels. The longer-term bias remains towards finding a buying opportunity, but confirmation is still required. Gold also lacks a clear immediate setup, with a more convincing upside breakout likely needed before the technical picture improves.

Focus for Today

The key question is whether the AI-driven equity rally can continue while bond yields remain at historically elevated levels.

Further S&P 500 and Nasdaq strength remains possible if the AI trade continues to lead. Dollar strength remains supported by higher yields, while potential yen strength is being monitored separately because of intervention and Japanese policy considerations.

Oil and gold require greater technical confirmation before offering higher-quality opportunities.

For now, the absence of a coherent cross-market signal means patience remains central: different markets, different drivers, selective opportunities.
