Strong Earnings Fail to Prevent Equity Weakness as Bond Yields Send Mixed Signals

Fundamental Overview

Global financial markets are facing renewed uncertainty as positive US corporate earnings struggle to support equity prices, while Treasury yields and geopolitical developments deliver conflicting signals.

Meta and Tesla both exceeded revenue and earnings-per-share expectations, yet their shares experienced significant selling pressure. Concerns surrounding capital expenditure and future growth expectations continue to influence investor sentiment.

Meanwhile, US Treasury yields are moving in opposite directions. The ten-year yield is declining while the two-year has recovered from approximately 4.73% to 4.82%, narrowing the spread between them to around 30 basis points.

Elevated US inflation continues to complicate expectations surrounding Federal Reserve policy. Markets are questioning how policymakers will reconcile persistent inflationary pressure with expectations of unchanged interest rates.

Risk Sentiment

Market conditions are mixed, with a short-term risk-off bias.

Asian equities experienced significant overnight weakness, while US indices also came under selling pressure despite encouraging technology earnings.

However, lower ten-year Treasury yields and continued dollar weakness suggest that the current selling pressure is not yet a coordinated, broad-based risk-off movement.

Geopolitical uncertainty remains a major concern. Conflicting reports surrounding shipping disruptions and continued oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz are contributing to unpredictable commodity price movements.

Technical Overview

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have weakened, although important support levels remain nearby. The S&P is displaying a possible, but imperfect, head-and-shoulders formation. Further downside requires confirmation rather than anticipation.

EUR/USD and NZD/USD retain their potential bullish structures, although upward momentum has been disappointing. Dollar weakness remains a possible opportunity.

Gold continues to struggle for direction, with no convincing breakout from its recent consolidation.

US oil is narrowing within a technical structure that could produce a significant directional move. A break above recent highs would support renewed upside, while a confirmed structural failure could favour further selling.

Focus for Today

The priority is to establish whether overnight equity weakness continues into the European and US sessions or whether buyers return around established support.

Attention remains on Treasury yields, dollar weakness, US equity support levels and oil’s developing technical structure.

With contradictory market signals and limited directional progress, patience and confirmed price action remain more important than anticipating a breakout.
