Fundamental Overview
Markets remain difficult to navigate as elevated bond yields, restrictive central-bank policy and continued geopolitical uncertainty compete with the resilience of global equity markets.
US Treasury yields remain one of the clearest signals. The 10-year yield has risen from approximately 4.39% to 5.24% over the past three months, while yields across the curve remain at significant multi-decade highs. This continues to support expectations for further US dollar strength.
Central banks also remain focused on inflation. The Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points, while upcoming inflation data could reinforce concerns about a second-round increase in price pressures.
Conflict in the Middle East remains another major source of uncertainty, particularly for oil. Without meaningful progress toward a peace agreement, energy prices remain vulnerable to further upside, while any credible signs of resolution could quickly push prices lower.
This week also brings significant US employment and inflation data, including ADP employment, Core PCE and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls.
Risk Sentiment
Risk sentiment remains mixed, with yesterday’s price action producing considerable volatility but very little meaningful directional progress.
Bond markets continue to signal restrictive financial conditions, while the dollar retains an upward bias. Equity markets, however, remain surprisingly resilient despite the pressure from higher yields and interest-rate expectations.
The S&P 500 continues to hold its broader upward structure, while the Nasdaq remains close to recent all-time highs.
This divergence means there is still no convincing broad-based risk-on or risk-off move. Markets are moving independently, making trade selection and confirmation particularly important.
Technical Overview
The US dollar remains the clearest directional theme.
EUR/USD continues to test the important 1.1350 area. A confirmed break below that level could open the way for further downside, while the significant support currently in place makes confirmation particularly important before considering continuation.
GBP/USD remains largely sideways and currently offers less conviction.
USD/JPY remains a longer-term opportunity based on potential yen strength. The expectation is for another meaningful move lower, with the possibility of official intervention adding to that directional bias.
Gold experienced a significant sell-off yesterday and retains downside momentum for now. However, after such a substantial move, patience is appropriate while assessing whether lower prices eventually create another buying opportunity.
Oil remains highly volatile and headline-driven. The underlying bias is marginally higher, but conflicting geopolitical signals continue to produce sharp moves in both directions.
Focus for Today
- US dollar: Further strength remains the primary directional bias.
- EUR/USD: Watch for confirmation below 1.1350.
- Japanese yen: Potential further strength, particularly if intervention becomes a factor.
- US indices: Remain patient as elevated yields compete with resilient equity momentum.
- Gold: Downside pressure remains, but avoid chasing yesterday’s move.
- Oil: Maintain flexibility while geopolitical headlines drive direction.
The defining feature of today’s market remains indecision. The fundamental case for a stronger dollar remains intact, but several major markets are sitting around important technical levels and have yet to provide convincing confirmation.
With volatility elevated and price action erratic, patience and disciplined trade selection remain more important than attempting to force opportunities from markets that have yet to establish a coherent direction.
