Fundamental Overview
Markets remain in a waiting phase ahead of tonight’s FOMC decision, with a 25-basis-point rate increase from 3.75% to 4.00% expected. Attention will extend beyond the rate decision itself to the message on the US economy and the path for monetary policy.
UK inflation rose to 3.1% year-on-year from 2.9%, in line with expectations, reinforcing the persistence of inflationary pressures. The Bank of England decision follows tomorrow, with a pause expected, while the Bank of Japan is expected to raise rates by 25 basis points.
Elevated US bond yields remain a major feature of the backdrop. Large government financing requirements, persistent inflation concerns and geopolitical uncertainty are creating an increasingly important interaction between monetary policy, bond markets and broader financial conditions.
Risk Sentiment
Market conditions remain mildly risk-off. Elevated bond yields, restrictive central-bank narratives, ongoing conflict in the Middle East and concerns surrounding the AI trade continue to weigh on sentiment.
Oil prices have pushed towards the 106–107 area, adding another potential source of inflationary pressure as the Middle East conflict shows little sign of easing.
Despite these concerns, markets have yet to produce a decisive directional move following the gaps seen after the weekend. The result is a combination of underlying risk-off pressure and short-term consolidation ahead of tonight’s major catalyst.
Technical Overview
US indices remain within relatively tight ranges, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq yet to deliver the anticipated downside momentum. The preferred opportunity remains a breakout from consolidation rather than trading the indecision inside the range.
Yen pairs are also moving largely sideways. The broader expectation remains for yen strength, but price action has yet to confirm the move.
US oil continues to show greater underlying strength. Sharp pullbacks have been followed by strong rallies, maintaining the upside bias, although execution remains challenging as prices repeatedly make new highs before pulling back aggressively.
EUR/USD also remains indecisive, with no meaningful change to the broader trade plan.
Focus for Today
Patience is the priority ahead of tonight’s FOMC decision.
The directional bias remains unchanged: potential weakness in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, yen strength, US dollar strength and continued upside potential in US oil. However, the market still needs to confirm these opportunities through price action.
Rather than forcing trades inside narrow ranges, the focus is on what happens when consolidation breaks. Risk should be defined before execution, particularly with a major central-bank catalyst capable of generating significant volatility later today.
